Other Names: Artichoke Thistle, Cardoon Artichoke
Description:
Cynara cardunculus
A dramatic architectural plant grown for its enormous, deeply cut silver-grey foliage that brings bold texture and contrast to the garden. Cardoon develops into an impressive upright clump of broad, felted leaves and, when the season is long enough, produces tall stems topped with striking violet-purple, thistle-like flowers. Its substantial size makes it an outstanding focal point in sunny borders, large containers and Mediterranean-inspired plantings, while the unusual silvery foliage pairs beautifully with colourful annuals and ornamental grasses.
